A quarry manager in Ghana called me about a rig that had stopped making hole. The crew had greased it, oiled it, run it flat out for three weeks. The hammer was eating a full shift every two days.

We walked the machine together. Twenty minutes told the story: air filter clogged solid, rod threads shiny with metal wear, grease fittings packed with old dirt. The fix was not a new hammer.

It was a checklist.

Why Maintenance Matters More Than You Think

Let me put a number on it. A quarry rig drilling production holes represents tens of thousands of dollars a month in contract value. One unplanned day costs more than a month of grease, filters and spare parts combined.

And the failures are almost never exotic. In the calls I take, the sequence is nearly always the same: a small thing went unnoticed, it wore something else, and two days later the hammer or the rotary head is down. Planned maintenance is boring. Unplanned breakdowns are expensive. Boring wins.

One more point before the list: keep a log. A one-line entry per day — hours, meters, air pressure, anything odd — turns a breakdown from a mystery into a clue. The best operators I know are the ones with dirty notebooks.

The Daily Checklist: 20 Minutes That Saves a Shift

Do this before the first hole, every morning. It takes twenty minutes with two people, less if the crew splits the rounds:

  • Air filter and intake. A blocked filter starves the hammer and the engine at once. Tap it out or blow it clean daily in dusty ground. This single check prevents more breakdowns than anything else on the machine.
  • Grease points. Pull every grease gun out and hit the fittings — mast slides, rotary head, rod handler. Wipe the fitting first. Pumping grease into dirt just grinds it in.
  • Rod threads. Look at every rod end before you make up the string. Hairline cracks and shiny galling mean stop and inspect, not “run it one more hole.”
  • Hammer and bit. A two-minute visual: bit gauge, carbide buttons, hammer body for dents, chuck for wear. Compare with yesterday’s condition.
  • Fluids. Engine oil, hydraulic oil, dust collector levels. Top up from clean containers only.
  • Hoses and fittings. Walk the machine once. A chafed hose at the compressor costs a shift when it blows at 10 bar.
  • Test run. One minute at idle, then one minute drilling air on. Listen for the hammer firing clean and steady before you commit to the hole.

That is it. Nothing on that list needs a specialist. It needs discipline.

Weekly and Monthly Checks

Weekly, set aside half a day:

  • Rotate the drill rods through the string so wear spreads evenly. Mark the ends and move them.
  • Pull one hammer apart for a full inspection — not just a look. Measure the piston, the chuck and the wear parts against spec.
  • Check compressor oil and its filter. Compressor oil looks fine until it isn’t; follow the hour meter, not the color.
  • Torque-check the mast bolts and the undercarriage. Vibration loosens things quietly.

Monthly, go deeper: full rod string inspection with a thread gauge, hydraulic system check (oil, filter, pressures), accumulator pre-charge, and a careful look at the dust collector system — a blocked collector shortens hammer and engine life in one move.

DTH Hammer Care: The Heart of the System

The hammer is where your penetration rate lives, and it is the most abused component on the machine. Three rules:

  • Air quality first. The hammer breathes whatever the compressor sends it. Water, dirt and old oil in the air line kill hammers faster than rock does. Keep the line filters clean and drain the separator daily.
  • Hammer oil matters. A few drops per minute through the oiler keeps the piston and chuck alive. Running dry saves oil and costs a hammer — a bad trade every time.
  • Read the bit. The bit tells you what is happening downhole. Carbide buttons lost early means impact energy is too high for the rock or the bit is undersized. Flat gauge wear means the hole is rubbing. Know the three wear patterns and you will know your hammer’s health without pulling it.

An undersized compressor stalls the hammer mid-hole and grinds the bit; that is the most common “hammer failure” I am asked to diagnose, and it is never the hammer.

Compressor and Air System

The air system deserves its own section because it silently steals production. Leaks are the quiet killer: a small leak in a coupling wastes measurable CFM, the hammer runs sluggish, the crew blames the hammer, and the hole crawls.

Weekly: soap-test every connection on the air line, replace worn couplings, and log compressor operating pressure — a slow drop is a filter or a leak, and both are cheap until they are not. In wet formations, remember that lifting water and cuttings needs more air velocity than a dry-hole calculation, so the compressor has to be sized for the worst case, not the average. How often should I pull the hammer apart?

Start with the manufacturer’s hour interval and inspect weekly in hard, abrasive rock. The first few teardowns tell you the real wear rate for your formation — then set the interval from what you measure, not from what you guess.

How do I know a bit is finished?

When the gauge is worn below spec, when carbide buttons are lost or chipped beyond dressing, or when penetration drops noticeably at the same air settings. A worn bit drills slow and beats up the hammer — change it before it fails downhole.

What do most crews forget?
