Crawler DTH Rig Site Setup: Move In, Level Up, Drill Faster

Three years back I watched a granite quarry in Vietnam burn three days of a two-week rig rental. The crawler DTH rig arrived on schedule. Then nothing moved.

The haul road had a soft patch nobody flagged. The bench was sloped the wrong way. Leveling swallowed a morning. The compressor hookup took another. By the time the first hole spudded in, half the rental was gone — and none of it was the rig’s fault.

Why Setup Speed Becomes Meterage

A drill rig earns money only when the hammer is making hole. Everything else is overhead.

On a two-week contract, one extra setup day cuts your productive window by 7%. On a rental, it is cash out of pocket. On an owner-operator job, it is the difference between finishing the bench and leaving it half-drilled.

The crews that win are not the ones with the newest machines. They are the ones that arrive ready. They walk the site before the truck arrives. They know where the rig stops, where it levels, and where the air comes from. Ten minutes of planning kills a day of scrambling.

Site Recon Before the Truck Arrives

Send someone to look at the ground before you dispatch anything. A phone photo is not enough. Walk it.

Check the haul road. Soft patches, steep camber, overhead lines, low branches. A 5.5-ton crawler is light for its class, but it still needs a road that will take it. If the ground is wet, ask how wet. Gradeability numbers like 30 degrees mean dry, hard ground. Mud is a different sport.

Check the bench. Which way does it slope? Where is the best drilling line? Can the rig work the full pattern without repositioning twice? Mark the compressor position too — every extra meter of air hose is pressure you paid for and will not get back.

Check the water and fuel access. A rig that cannot refuel on the bench is a rig that walks off it every afternoon.

Moving a Crawler Rig: What the Brochure Doesn’t Show

Crawler undercarriages earn their keep on uneven ground. A compact unit like the ZJ516 — 5,500 kg, 460 mm ground clearance, 30-degree gradeability — will climb and turn where a truck-mounted rig cannot go. That is the selling point. It is also the trap.

Crawler travel is slow. Plan moves in meters per minute, not per hour. A 200-meter reposition can eat forty minutes if you stop to check every boulder. Route the machine along the line it will drill. Minimize turns. Turns are where tracks dig in and where operators get impatient.

Keep the machine level while traveling when you can. Side-slope travel is how crawlers tip. If the bench cambers hard, drive the contour, not across it. And never move a crawler with the mast up unless the manufacturer allows it. I have seen a bent mast end a contract in one careless reposition.

Leveling: The Step Most Crews Rush

An unleveled rig drills an unleveled hole. Simple as that.

Angled holes wander. Rods flex and wear. The hammer works off-center and the hole goes oval. On hard rock you may not notice until the string sticks — and unsticking a stuck string costs a shift.

Modern crawlers make this easy. The D452C carries a ±14-degree leveling capability on top of its 25-degree gradeability, so it can square up on benches that would have needed hand-built pads ten years ago. Use it. Set the level with the inclinometer or a bubble, not by eye.

Ten minutes spent leveling is cheaper than one hour fighting an angled hole. This is the step crews skip, and it is the step that shows up in every report I read about stuck tools and broken rods.

Match the Compressor Before You Spud In

A DTH hammer lives on air. Not oil, not fuel — air. If the compressor is undersized, the hammer cycles slow, the bit stops cutting, and the crew blames the bit. The bit was fine. The air was short.

Match the numbers before the first hole: hole diameter and depth dictate flow and pressure. A machine with an integrated air system, like the D452C at 15 m³/min and up to 18 bar, removes the whole matching problem — one engine, one air supply, no external compressor to coordinate. For a compact rig with an external unit, get the compressor on site and hooked up the night before. Do not discover the wrong coupler at 7 a.m. on the bench.

First-Hole Checklist

Run this before the first rotation, every time:

– Level the rig on the pad; verify with the inclinometer
– Confirm air pressure and flow at the hammer, not at the compressor
– Check rod length, hammer size and bit diameter against the hole plan
– Grease the threads; a dry joint is a stuck joint later
– Test the dust collection system before it fills the air with rock dust
– Mark the safety zone; nobody stands in the hammer line
– Time the first meters — they tell you if the package is tuned

How long does it take to level a crawler DTH rig?

With hydraulic leveling and an inclinometer, 15 to 30 minutes on a reasonable pad. Add time only if the bench is badly sloped and needs manual preparation first.

Does a 5.5-ton crawler need special transport permits?

Usually not. In most countries a standard flatbed handles it without overweight or oversize permits. Check bridge and width limits on your route, but this class is deliberately transport-friendly.
