A truck mounted water well drilling rig is the workhorse of village water supply, irrigation and rural contracting. One truck, one crew, one rig — a package that moves itself to the next borehole. But “truck mounted” covers a wide range of machines, and the differences decide whether you finish the season in profit or in repairs. Last year a contractor in northern Ghana called us about replacing a tired rig. His old machine sat on a 4×2 truck that was never rated for the mast. Frame cracks, wandering steering, and a crew that spent more time in the workshop than on the hole. He wanted a “bigger” rig. I asked him to start with the truck instead.

1. Truck, Trailer or Crawler: Pick the Right Platform
The platform decides how much of your week is spent drilling instead of traveling. A truck mounted rig carries the mast, rotary head and often the compressor on the carrier vehicle. It drives from site to site at road speed. That makes it the standard choice for water well contractors working across a district — borehole to borehole, no lowbed needed.
A trailer-mounted rig is towed behind a prime mover. Lighter to build, easier to register in some countries, but you add setup time and you need a capable tow vehicle. It beats every wheeled machine on a quarry bench or a muddy hillside, but moving it between cities means a lowbed and a crane.
Rule of thumb: if 80% of your holes are reached by road, go truck mounted. If the ground itself is the problem, go crawler. If your budget splits the difference, a truck mounted rig with a detachable compressor trailer is a workable middle ground.
2. Depth and Hole Size, Matched to the Drilling Method
Every truck mounted rig is built around a target depth and hole diameter. Community water wells across West and East Africa typically run 60–200 m with 6 to 8 inch holes. Deeper programs, say 300 m plus, need a heavier mast, a bigger rod string and more pullback than a light rig can offer.
Match the method to the ground, not the other way around. Hard rock and boulders call for a DTH hammer driven by compressed air. Sand, clay and weathered formations drill faster with mud rotary — which needs a mud pump and circulation system. Many modern packages combine both: DTH for the hard upper section, mud rotary when the formation softens. 3. Air Compressor and Mud Pump Pairing
A DTH rig is only as fast as its air. Check the compressor’s free air delivery at working pressure, not just the engine tag. A hammer that needs 21 bar and 15 m3/min will fire soft on a compressor that delivers 12 m3/min — the gauge reads full pressure, but volume is missing, and penetration drops by half.
Some truck mounted rigs carry an integrated compressor, which keeps the setup compact. Others mount on a separate trailer, which keeps the carrier truck lighter and easier to service. Both work. What fails is a mismatched pair. Before you commit, list the hammer size you plan to run and confirm the compressor can feed it at depth — the hammer spec sheet tells you the exact volume. The same logic applies to the mud pump for rotary work. Pump capacity must match hole size and depth or you cannot lift cuttings out of the borehole. A small pump on a deep program means slow drilling and stuck pipe risk.
4. Mast, Pullback and Pipe Handling
Watch the crew work a full rod change before you buy. That is the moment a rig proves itself. Ask three questions. How long is the mast stroke? A 6–9 m stroke means fewer connections per hole than a short-stroke machine. What is the pullback? It must lift the heaviest string you will run — rods, hammer, bit — plus a margin for a stuck string. Is there a breakout wrench and a rod handler? Without them, two tired men wrestle every joint by hand.
Pipe handling is where small rigs quietly eat your day. A machine that drills beautifully but needs forty minutes per rod change will lose to an older rig with a faster cycle. Count the full cycle: hoist, break, add rod, make up, resume drilling. Multiply by the number of rods in your deepest hole.
5. New or Used: What to Inspect Before Money Moves
Buying used saves cash upfront and can cost double in the first season. If the rig is used, inspect the carrier truck first — frame rails for cracks near the outrigger mounts, cab floor for rust, engine hours against service records, and the brakes and steering, which carry the loaded weight. Then check the drilling side: mast straightness with the string hanging, hydraulic leaks at every fitting, pump packing, and the condition of the rod threads.
Buying new from a factory, ask for the test report and a video of the unit drilling before it is packed. Confirm which spares ship in the container and which you must order separately. And never assume the rated depth is achievable in your ground — rated depth is usually quoted in easy drilling conditions, so size up one class if your rock is hard.
6. Shipping, Spares and the Real Cost of Ownership
The purchase price is not the cost. A truck mounted rig crosses an ocean as a flat-rack or a container load, and the freight, port handling and import duty can add a meaningful share on top. Ask the supplier for the loaded dimensions, weight and the export packing method before you compare quotes, and ask how the machine is protected for a sea voyage.
Then price the first-season spares: filters, seals, thread compound, a spare hammer or bit set, rod ends. In remote work, a machine without spares is a machine that waits. If your market restricts large trucks, a trailer-mounted package often fits the regulations better. Ask the supplier for the full weight breakdown, not just the rig weight.
Do I need a separate compressor with a truck mounted DTH rig?
