Last spring I watched a quarry operator burn through two drill bits in a single shift. Fresh granite, 115 mm holes, and a rig that was simply too small for the pattern. Not a bad machine — the wrong one. Torque ran out at twelve meters, rod changes turned into wrestling matches, and the blasting crew sat waiting on a bench that cost more per hour than the rig did.

That job stuck with me. Quarry blasthole drilling looks simple from the outside — drill a hole, load it, blast. But every hole is a small contract with the rock. Get the rig-to-hole match wrong and you lose money in slow penetration, stuck strings and wasted explosives.

What Blasthole Drilling Demands From a Rig

Blastholes are not water wells and they are not core holes. They are short, wide, drilled fast, and drilled in patterns. A typical quarry bench runs holes of 90–145 mm diameter down to 20–30 meters, sometimes angled, sometimes horizontal for road cuts and slope work.

Three things separate a good blasthole rig from a mediocre one:

  • Hole diameter range that covers your production pattern without running at the edge of the spec.
  • Torque and feed force enough to keep a hammer biting in fractured and fresh rock alike.
  • Air capacity matched to the hammer — this is the failure point I see most often on site.

If the machine cannot keep all three in balance, the blasting crew becomes the bottleneck and the quarry pays for it twice — once in drill time, once in blast quality.

Match the Rig to Your Hole Pattern

Start with the pattern, not the brand. Measure your average bench height, your standard hole diameter, and the hardest rock you actually drill. Then look for a rig whose working range sits comfortably inside those numbers.

One warning I give every buyer: do not size the rig for your deepest hole. Size it for your most common hole. Oversized machines burn fuel, cost more per meter, and are harder to move between benches. A rig that fits 90% of your shifts is worth more than one that covers 100% and never pays for itself.

Torque and Feed: The Numbers That Decide Penetration

Penetration rate in a DTH system is driven by hammer energy and air, but the rig controls the rotation. If the rotary head cannot hold enough torque, the bit stalls in fractured ground and the hammer pounds in place. That is how drill pipe joints get destroyed and how shifts get lost.

For 90–145 mm blastholes in medium to hard rock, I look for at least 3000 N·m of maximum torque as a floor. The ZJ516 delivers 3500 N·m — enough headroom to keep the string rotating in blocky granite instead of stalling at the worst possible moment, halfway up a bench.

Feed force matters just as much, and it is the spec buyers ignore. The hammer needs steady weight-on-bit to keep the bit in contact with fresh rock. Weak feed force means the hammer bounces, the bit dulls unevenly, and your hole drifts off the pattern.

Air Supply: The Hammer’s Fuel

A DTH hammer is an air engine. Starve it and it dies mid-hole. The most common mistake on quarry sites is pairing a big hammer with a compressor that was sized for the old rig. Moving Between Benches and Between Sites

Quarry rigs move constantly — between benches, across haul roads, and between sites when the season changes. Crawler undercarriages handle this better than wheeled carriers on rough ground, and every hour saved moving is an hour of drilling recovered.

Three numbers tell you if a crawler rig will move well on your site:

  • Gradeability — 30° covers most bench ramps; anything less and you will be winching.
  • Ground clearance — 460 mm clears the rubble and drill cuttings that pile up on benches.
  • Transport weight — a compact 5500 kg design moves on a standard flatbed without special permits in most regions.

Dust Control and Operator Safety on the Bench

Dust is not just a comfort issue. Silica dust regulations are tightening in most markets, and a rig without a dust collection system is a rig that stops when the inspector arrives.

A factory-fitted dust collection system keeps the bench cleaner, protects the operator, and reduces wear on the rig itself — abrasive cuttings find their way into every moving part if you let them. When you compare quotes, ask whether dust control is included or an extra. The difference is usually more than the price difference between two similar rigs.
