The first time I saw a DTH rig get stuck, it was on a quarry site in West Africa. Rain had turned the haul road into red mud, and a truck-mounted unit sank to its axles before drilling a single hole. 1. Hole Diameter and Depth — Match the Machine to the Rock

DTH rigs are bought for a range, not a single hole. Quarry and slope work usually runs 90–145 mm holes at shallow to medium depth. Mine and large construction jobs push toward 200 mm with bigger hammers.

Ask what your clients actually drill most, then buy one size above it. A rig that handles 90–200 mm covers quarry blastholes, water wells and foundation work without being oversized on either end.

2. Torque and the Hammer You Plan to Run

Torque decides whether the string keeps turning in broken ground. A crawler DTH rig rated around 3,500 N·m handles 3″, 4″ and 5″ hammers comfortably. Push into harder, denser rock and you want the 6,000 N·m class.

Here is where most buyers make the mistake: they pick the rig first, then discover their DTH hammers and bits do not match the rod size or air demand. Check hammer compatibility and drill rod size (Ø76 / Ø89 mm are the common ones) before you sign anything.

3. Air Supply: Integrated or External Compressor

Air is the engine of DTH drilling. If the compressor cannot feed the hammer, penetration drops and the string can stick.

A compact crawler around 5,500 kg moves on a standard trailer. A 30° gradeability and 460 mm clearance get it over the muddy tracks and loose benches that stop lighter machines. On uneven ground, ±14° hydraulic leveling saves an hour on every setup.

5. Drill String: Rods, Pipes and Rod Handling

The drill string is where daily wear lives. Confirm the rod length matches your site layout — Ø76 × 3000 mm pipes are the workhorse for crawler DTH rigs. If you drill deep holes repeatedly, look for a carousel with 6+1 pipe capacity and an optional rod-changing system. Manual handling is fine for shallow work; automatic saves your crew on production drilling.

6. Dust Control and Operator Environment

Quarry and mining sites now come with dust and noise requirements. A high-efficiency dust collector with a large filtration area keeps the work area clean and your crew healthy — and increasingly, it keeps the contract. An enclosed operator cabin is not a luxury on a 12-hour shift; it is what keeps a good driller on your payroll.

7. Spare Parts, Support and the Complete Package

A DTH rig that stops is a cost center. Before buying, confirm the manufacturer supplies wear parts — hammers, bits, drill pipes, compressor parts — and how fast they ship. Ask about pre-shipment inspection and OEM/ODM configuration if you buy under your own brand.

In my experience the best deals are complete packages: rig, drill rods, hammers, bits, compressor and spare parts supplied together.
